James Bailey and his brother, Richard, left England together or at about the same time and both settled in Rowley. James married, established a home and lived there the rest of his life,

Farming and animal husbandry; with his son John, James served as the Rowley pinder.
Other Activities:
James Bailey was actively involved in the life of the First Church in Rowley, one of the very early Massachusetts Bay congregations. He and his son John are mentioned in the records Essex County Court as disagreeing with the pastor in 1678. He and several others testified in open court about the "unbrotherly and unchristian carriage" of the Rev. Mr. Phillips.
